The result is a strain on the right side of the heart, forcing the heart to work harder to move blood to the lungs, resulting in heart failure and death. PPH has also been known as a Primary Arterial Hypertension, Unexplained Pulmonary Hypertension, or Pulmonary Vascular Disease.
Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension is specifically a condition in which the blood pressure in the Pulmonary Artery stays consistently high. Muscles in the artery walls may constrict narrowing the insides of the arteries. Artery walls may thicken, as muscle mass increases, forming scar tissue and narrowing the arteries. Blood clots may develop in the arteries and create blockage. As a result, with less space for blood to flow, arteries may harden and over time become blocked.
After a while, the left side of the heart must work harder to try to pump blood to the lungs, the heart fails to pump enough blood through the body, and the right side of the heart weakens, resulting in right heart failure.
